Looking for a Jonah and the whale craft for kids? Teach kids Jonah 2:9b with this fun Jonah and the big fish craft!
Of course, no one can escape God, as Jonah discovered.
Jonah and the Big Fish
After God brought a storm on the ship Jonah rode in, and the sailors hurled him to the sea, God caused Jonah to be swallowed by a great fish. Actually, in the Hebrew, he was swallowed by a sea beast or sea creature. Today, we sometimes say he was swallowed by a whale. Whatever swallowed Jonah, it swam and it was really big!
Make this fun craft to celebrate God’s sovereignty over all things, including sea creatures and salvation!
Jonah and the Whale Craft
Read Jonah chapters 1-4 as a family before you begin your craft. In the ESV, Jonah 2:9b–at the end of Jonah’s prayer from the belly of the fish–says:
Salvation belongs to the Lord!
As you make your craft, discuss Jonah chapters 1-2:
- How did Jonah respond to God’s instruction?
- What did God do when Jonah got on the ship?
- Did Jonah repent (turn from his sin) and obey God during the storm?
- How did the sailors respond to God in Jonah 1:16 after they saw his power over the sea? Do you think they believed in God and were saved?
- How did God save Jonah from drowning?
- How long did it take Jonah to call out to God for help?
- What did God cause the great fish to do?
- In just the first two chapters of Jonah, we see that God is sovereign–the powerful ruler in command of–over the sea, people, creatures, and salvation!
Talk about how we see that salvation belongs to the Lord in each chapter of Jonah. Need help teaching the Gospel to kids? Grab your free poster and memory cards here.
