Remember God’s Love for Christians at Easter

Before you make your Resurrection wreath, read Philippians 2:3-11 together:

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:3-11, ESV

Read the passage above with your children and discuss:

  • How are we to imitate Jesus in the way we think and act? (We are to humbly consider others more important than ourselves, and look to their interests.)
  • Who is Jesus? (Jesus is the second person of the One, True God.)
  • What did Jesus do for us? (He became fully human and fully man. He died on the cross to save those who believe in him from their sins (Romans 10:9).)
  • Why was this obedience to the Father  humbling to Jesus? (Jesus, the Son of God and God the Son, became human and died a public and devastating death.) (The Father is the first person of the One, True God. The Holy Spirit is the third.)
  • What does Scripture tell us about Jesus after the Crucifixion? (He rose from the dead. God the Father exalted Jesus. Jesus’ name is above all names and every knee will bow to him and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!)
  • Who does the Resurrection of Jesus glorify? (God the Father!)

The Resurrection of Jesus causes Christians to celebrate. It is a joyous event. Jesus’ Crucifixion and Resurrection should also cause us to be humble in the way we think of and treat others. After all, our Lord and Savior humbled himself for us!

As you make this wreath, talk as a family about all God has done for you!

Tips for Art Projects with Kids

Doing art projects with kids can be a challenge. For that reason, many parents forgo this valuable time altogether. As an art major and a parent who has done frequent art projects with my four children, I have a few suggestions for you.

  1. Cover your space. Use painting drop cloths and plastic to keep your furniture and flooring protected.
  2. Cover your kids. Grab a couple of your old T-shirts and throw them over your kids, buy them painting aprons, or designate clothes specifically for crafting.
  3. Do the prep work in advance. Do as much prep work for a project as you can before you get the kids involved. Not everything on the page needs to be their work. It’s OK to help.
  4. Schedule several short sessions for one project. Children need several days to be able to create larger projects. Art is time-consuming and requires energy.
  5. Encourage your kids. Children are likely to be frustrated by the disconnect in the artwork they envision and the art they actually create. Remind your kids that they improve every time they create, and tell them how much you love their work (even if you don’t know what it is!). Also, stick figures are fabulous.
  6. Operate the hot glue gun. Hot glue burns are terrible. Until your kids are old enough to cook, I’d advise you do the hot gluing.

Bible Road Trip™ Year One Sample

1) Make a Christian Easter Wreath.

Christian Easter Wreath Craft for Kids
Use a paper dinner plate to trace the outside circumference of your Easter wreath onto a piece of cardstock paper. Draw a circle inside the Easter wreath base, leaving about two inches for your wreath base. Carefully cut out your wreath, and cut out the interior of the wreath. This will leave you a ring of cardstock.

Christian Easter Wreath Craft for Kids

Cut long strips of burlap fabric, then wrap your Easter wreath base to cover it. Glue the beginning of each burlap strip to the cardstock ring, then glue the end of each strip before gluing a new strip to your Easter wreath.

2) Cut Out Your Easter Wreath Craft Templates.

Print the Easter wreath craft template for your kids.

3) Make the Empty Tomb for your Christian Easter Wreath.

Christian Easter Wreath Craft for Kids
Now that you’ve traced the template pieces onto your cardstock, cut out the pieces as shown above.

Christian Easter Wreath Craft for Kids
Glue the center of the sun onto the sun rays. Glue the door of the tomb onto the smaller arched piece. Glue the larger arched piece onto the oval strip of ground.

Christian Easter Wreath Craft for Kids
Glue the front of the tomb to the base of the tomb, then glue the stone onto the side of the tomb. Be sure the stone is to the side, as it has been rolled away!

Remind your kids that the giant, heavy stone was in front of the entrance to the tomb, sealed the stone to the tomb, and set a guard outside the tomb. The Romans thought that would help stop Jesus’ followers from stealing his body (Matthew 27:62-66).

But, no one stole Jesus’ body because he rose from the dead! How was the stone rolled away? By an angel! (Matthew 28:2)

4) Create the Wooden Crosses for Your Christian Easter Wreath.

Christian Easter Wreath Craft for Kids
Break sticks to create three crosses and glue them together where they cross, as shown above. The middle cross should be taller than the other two crosses.

You can find the story of the two robbers who were crucified beside Jesus in Luke 23:32-49.

5) Finish Your Christian Easter Wreath Craft with Your Kids.

To finish your Easter wreath, glue your tomb to the bottom center of your wreath. Glue the sun to the top center of the wreath.

Christian Easter Wreath Craft for Kids
Glue the three crosses to the back side of the wreath, with the largest cross in the center.

Christian Easter Wreath Craft for Kids

Make a small loop with your burlap ribbon and glue it on the top of the backside of the Easter wreath craft. Once the glue dries, use your loop to hang the wreath.

Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible

Looking for a family discipleship book that will give you a crash course in leading your kids through God’s Word? I’ve got you covered.

Love the Bible for Kids | A resource you'll love!

You want your kids to learn and love the Bible.

You want to teach the Bible…

As parents, we deeply desire the best for our kids. We look for the right schools, we make them eat right and exercise, and we get them involved in extracurricular activities. We take our job as parents seriously.

But are we also putting our time and energy into
teaching them the Bible? Giving them the life-changing, soul-nourishing words of Scripture is not only doable, it’s an essential part of parenting kids for Jesus. And the good news is, studying God’s Word as a family doesn’t have to be difficult!

2 Timothy 2:15, ESV, says:

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,
a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Our job, as parents who love Jesus, is to help our kids become approved workers, unashamed and rightly handling the word of truth.

The good news? Teaching the Bible isn’t hard. Your family can learn the Bible together.

…and you can!

A Crash Course in Teaching the Bible to Your Kids

Danika Cooley’s book, Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible, will give you the tools and confidence to study the Bible as a family. It will help you identify and overcome your objections and fears, give you a crash course in what the Bible is all about and how to teach it, and provide the guidance you need to set up a family Bible study habit.

You will finish this book feeling encouraged and empowered to initiate and strengthen your child’s relationship with the Lord through His Word.
