When my kids were little, one of the four talked. And talked. Then he talked some more. That kiddo had some stuff to say.

I loved his sweet little voice so much. Sometimes, though, I had dinner to make. Bills to pay. Silence to contemplate.

So, I convinced my husband we needed a puppet house. Not just any puppet house, but a custom made one. A friend’s husband built the puppet house I designed. I have some spatial issues and measurements aren’t really my friend. Once we had the largest puppet house on earth installed inconveniently in the middle of our family / dining room, and I sewed and hung scarlet velvet curtains and a roof, I filled a basket with fabric hand puppets.

The kids loved it. They would retell stories we’d read aloud earlier in the day.

The thing they really loved doing, though?

The boys loved creating Bible character puppets using cardstock and craft sticks. They would take turns tracing and cutting and gluing, then narrate the Bible stories they knew in detail, with funny voices and sometimes improvised jokes.

Bible Stick Puppets

As Christian parents, we want our kids to learn and love the Bible. We want them to know and remember God’s Word in a way that fills their little hearts with truth. But will building 42 Bible character stick puppets and retelling Bible stories really help our kids understand Scripture better? Well, yes. And, it’s fun.

In the third section of my book, Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible, I talk about taking what you’ve learned about helping your kids learn the Bible and applying it in a way that will help them love God’s Word.

In chapter 8: Reading the Word Together, I talk about effective ways to read the Bible as a family, and how to help your kids retain what they’ve learned each day. One of the suggested projects in the “Creative narration” section is to create Bible character stick puppets. Kids can reenact the Bible stories you read, which helps them consider the narrative, and aids with recall.

This set of free printable Bible stick puppet templates is a fun craft for kids, and it will help them create a library of characters to use in their narrations. Each character can be customized and decorated to make them fun and unique!

You want your kids to learn and love the Bible.

You want to teach the Bible…

As parents, we deeply desire the best for our kids. We look for the right schools, we make them eat right and exercise, and we get them involved in extracurricular activities. We take our job as parents seriously.

But are we also putting our time and energy into
teaching them the Bible? Giving them the life-changing, soul-nourishing words of Scripture is not only doable, it’s an essential part of parenting kids for Jesus. And the good news is, studying God’s Word as a family doesn’t have to be difficult!

2 Timothy 2:15, ESV, says:

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,
a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Our job, as parents who love Jesus, is to help our kids become approved workers, unashamed and rightly handling the word of truth.

The good news? Teaching the Bible isn’t hard. Your family can learn the Bible together.

…and you can!
