In the Garden of Eden, at the beginning of the world, God gave his people good Creation gifts, which we call Creation ordinances. We are blessed when we live by them. Genesis 2:24 (ESV) says:
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
When we marry, it is an incredible thing to be a part of God’s formation of a new nuclear family. Then, to watch your child join in marriage to form a family under God’s plan, is another amazing event.
Marriage is holy–set apart for God’s glory. It is important. It is also a blessing.
Praying for your marriage is essential. We need God’s help as we walk in union with our spouse–and with him.

Prayers for Your Marriage
I wrote 60 Scriptures You Can Pray as a 60-day devotional to take you through eight types of prayer, straight from Scripture. As we study prayer in the Bible, we learn a lot about what God would have us say, how we should approach him, and what we can expect when we do.
There are not prayers, per say, for marriage in Scripture, but there are a lot of verses about marriage. We can absolutely pray God’s words back to him! In fact, these prayers are quick and simple–you can pray them throughout the day.
Here are 5 things you can pray for your marriage today that come straight from God’s Word:
1) Pray you will be an excellent wife.
Proverbs 31:10-11 says:
An excellent wife who can find?
She is far more precious than jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
You can pray:
Heavenly Father, I desire to glorify you in my marriage, and I hope to bless my husband. Help me to be an excellent wife today, more precious to my husband than jewels. Let me be trustworthy in my behavior, my words, and my attitude. You have entrusted me with the heart of this man. Help me to steward that love to your glory.
2) Pray you and your husband will enjoy each other as God designed.
1 Corinthians 7:5 says:
Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
You can pray:
Lord, help me to joyfully participate in the marriage gifts you have given to us. Let me be available to my husband, and–likewise–help him to be available to me.
3) Pray you will submit to your husband as to the Lord.
Ephesians 5:22-24 says:
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
You can pray:
Father, give me the strength to be loving, winsome, and kind with my husband. Help me to submit to his leadership, even when my heart rebels against your good design. Let me be helpful as he strives to love me as he loves himself.
4) Pray your husband will love you as Christ loved the church.
Ephesians 5:25-30 says:
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.
You can pray:
Father God, thank you for giving my husband the job of loving me as he loves his very own body. He is responsible for caring for, nourishing, and cherishing me. Please give him the strength to love me well, in good times and in hard times.
5) Pray for mutual love and respect for each other.
Ephesians 5:31-33 says:
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
You can pray:
Dear God, please help my husband and I to be united together in you. Let my husband love me as he loves himself. Help me to show him respect. Help my love and respect for my husband to grow as I look to you in all things.
Marriage is not easy, but it is a great joy when we live in the way God designed for us to live. When we honor and live out God’s plan for married life, we are blessed. God hears your prayers for your marriage, and he hears–too–your prayers for the future (or current) marriages of each of your children.
By praying Scripture over you marriage, you can ask God to strengthen your home.
