What Creation Tells Us about God

Have you ever wondered what to teach your kids as you are working through a Bible passage or story? Scripture has several overarching themes we should look for as we read.

One of the primary themes of Scripture is who God is.

Bible Investigators: Creation is a puzzle-based Bible study for 8-12 year olds. It’s a fun, hands-on way for kids to learn the doctrine of Creation.

God Our Creator

One of the very important things we learn from the doctrine of Creation is more about who God is.

Bible Investigators: Creation has six sections, or units, your kids will work through as they learn about what the Bible tells us about God’s Creation of the heavens, earth, creatures, and humans. The fourth section, “Our Creator God,” will help children learn six important truths about God. Check them out:

1) God Is Eternal

Before the mountains were brought forth,
    or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
    from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Psalm 90:2, ESV

Your kids will learn the four overarching themes of Scripture. They will learn, too, that God has always been. He does not have a beginning, because he was, he is, and he always will be. They will remember the truths they learned about the Trinity in prior sections. Your children will also examine what the words eternal and everlasting mean, and examine the word picture that Moses gives us in Psalm 90.

2) God Is All-Powerful

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
    let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded, and it stood firm. Psalm 33:8-9, ESV

The doctrine of Creation also teaches us that God is all-powerful and sovereign. He can do things no one else in the universe can do because he is the King of Everything. They will examine the proper response to God’s might, and discover what it means to fear the Lord, and to stand in awe of him.

3) God Is Uncreated

Of old you laid the foundation of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but you will remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.
You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away,
    but you are the same, and your years have no end. Psalm 102:25-27, ESV

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” – Revelation 1:8, ESV

Your kids will learn about the massive solar system, then uncover the fact that God created it–and he is bigger and more powerful than all the planets and stars. In fact, no one created God. For fun, they will also learn how to draw the solar system! Then, they’ll learn a little Greek as they consider God’s title for himself, the Alpha and the Omega.

4) God the Father Created

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” – Genesis 1:26a, ESV

‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.’ – Jeremiah 32:17, ESV

Each of the three Persons of our one, true God played a role in Creation. Your kids will examine the clues the Bible gives us about who God is and what he has done in the Creation of the heavens and the earth. They will learn more about God the Father, and about how the attributes of God apply to each Person of the Trinity. They will also consider God the Father’s care for us, and how we–in turn–can care for his earth and his creatures.

5) God the Son Created

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. – John 1:1-3, ESV

Kids will examine clues God has given us in Scripture to discover important facts about how Jesus was and is involved in Creation. They will also learn a little about the apostle John, and examine John 1:1-3 in the light of several other verses. Then, they will look at a number of ways they can sharpen their skills as Bible Investigators who examine God’s written Word for important clues.

6) God the Holy Spirit Created

Lord, how manifold are your works!
    In wisdom have you made them all;
    the earth is full of your creatures.

When you send forth your Spirit, they are created,
    and you renew the face of the ground.

Psalm 104:24, 30, ESV

The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. – Genesis 1:2, ESV

Last, in section four of Bible Investigators: Creation, your kids will learn about the original languages of the Bible. They’ll learn about an important code word–the word spirit in Hebrew. They will examine Psalm 104, learning what the words mean. Then, they will uncover what Scripture says about the Holy Spirit’s role in Creation, right at the beginning of the Bible.  Your kids will also think through the implications of the idea that God created everything.

Each of the above six lessons about our Creator God includes teaching, notebooking boxes, and three Bible verse puzzles. With puzzle-based Bible study, kids can become Bible Investigators in an exciting way that doesn’t feel like work. And you will have a great way to teach them all about our Creator God, his Creation, and how to study the Bible!
