Did you know you can use Bible puzzles and games to teach kids God’s Word? It’s true! Your children can learn Scripture while having fun!

When I was a kid, I begged my mom to get me the newest puzzle book every time we went through the grocery store. I loved everything puzzle-related–logic puzzles, word searches, dot-to-dots, and more. I would do it complete every puzzle book long before we ventured to the story again!
It’s not surprising that when my kids were, well, still kids, that I shared my love of puzzles with them. (Seriously, what child doesn’t love puzzles?)
Children can learn so much from word puzzles and games, like vocabulary, synonyms, logic skills, pattern recognition, and more!
But, can Bible puzzles and games be used to teach the Bible? Yes, I believe they can.

Bible Puzzles and Games to Teach God’s Word
We want our kids to love God’s Word. As parents, it’s a blessing to see them move toward a desire to study the Bible independently. As I was writing my new puzzle-based Bible study for your 8-12 year olds, Bible Investigators: Creation, I approached it with two concerns:
- I wanted kids to learn about the doctrine of Creation in a fun way.
- I wanted the puzzles to challenge kids to really think about what they’re learning.
I think a Bible verse-based word puzzle can be an excellent way for kids to move toward memorize a verse or passage.
But, to learn about the doctrine of Creation, there have to be words!
That’s how the puzzle book I meant to write became a six-section, 272-page unit study. There are words about God’s Creation, written in a fun way, to help your kids learn more about: how to be an effective Bible investigator, how God created everything out of nothing in the beginning, how the story of the Creation event took six days, how God may your child intentionally and for a purpose, how our Creator God is eternal, all-powerful, uncreated, and triune, how God gave good Creation gifts to his people right from the beginning, and how God planned for our salvation.
The narrative in the book is a fun, yet traditional way to learn more about God and his Word.
So, how do puzzles and games help kids learn more about God’s Word?
Take a look at some of the types of puzzles and games I used in Bible Investigators: Creation, and how they’ll help your kids learn more about the Bible:
- Word Searches | Word searches help kids commit a verse to memory, help them become familiar with words used to describe God’s Creation, and help with pattern recognition. In some word searches, they’ll learn new vocabulary–and even discover new animal species!
- Crosswords | Crosswords are a great way for kids to discover a word from the definition, helping them really think about what the words in a verse mean. Kids will also use biblical context and memory of the verses they’ve learned before to help them solve the puzzles.
- Rebus Puzzles | Rebus puzzles are a fun way to do a bunch of mini-riddles to uncover a verse. The process of solving a riddle for each word helps cement the verse in their memories!
- Dot-to-Dots | Dot-to-dots allow kids uncover a picture to help them better understand and remember a concept.
- Logic Puzzles | Logic puzzles are my favorite. They can help children really tie together a concept in their minds as they work to link three clues for each answer.
- Missing Letter Puzzles | Missing letter puzzles help kids work on theological vocabulary and synonyms while uncovering a verse.
- Cryptograms | Cryptograms are a great way for children to work through the context of the words in a verse as they work to decode each letter and then identify it throughout the verse. Over time, their theological vocabulary will build and grow.
- Word Sudoku | Word sudoku is a fun way for kids to think through pattern recognition and sequencing while they consider the things God has created.
- Mazes | Mazes can help kids think about their ultimate objective and their journey to get there. They can also be a fun way to understand the illustration of a biblical concept.
- How-to-Draw Pages | How-to-draw instructions are another way for your visual kids to spend time relating a drawing to an important biblical concept. It’s something they may remember for a long time.
- Matching Pairs | While connecting matching pairs, children learn to think about what goes together–and why.
- Word Scrambles | As kids unscramble words, and then put the words in the order of their verse, they learn to consider vocabulary, context, and synonyms.
- Journal Pages | Journaling is a great way for kids to narrate what they’ve just learned in a written or visual way. Bible Investigators: Creation has lots of journal boxes for your kids to work in!
See what I mean? Bible puzzles and games–paired with instructive, fun narrative and journal boxes with great prompts–are a fun way for kids to learn the Bible.
Your kids can learn about God’s Word through fun Bible puzzles and games, paired with interesting teaching, in a puzzle-based package they’ll love.
