Invariably, a visiting child would always stand up and say forcefully, “God didn’t make me,” or “God didn’t create the world.”
It was sad, but it did give me an opportunity to give a quick message on the Creation story, the Fall, and God’s great plan for salvation.
Our children need to know the story of Creation in Genesis. They also need to know some important lessons we learn from God’s Creation of everything.
What is the Creation Story?
The Creation story is found in Genesis chapter 1. The first chapter of the Bible describes the six days of Creation (days 1 through 6). In chapter 2 of Genesis, we learn about the day of rest God instituted on day 7, and we learn more about God’s creation of Adam and Eve, the garden of Eden, and the Creation ordinances (read more about those in The Gifts from God our Kids Must Know About). Then, in chapter 3, we read about the Fall–when sin entered the world.
The Creation story is so important for our kids to learn about. In fact, a lot of the doctrine throughout Scripture comes right from the story of God’s Creation.
Bible Investigators: Creation is a puzzle-based Bible study for 8-12 year olds that will help your kids learn about the days of Creation–and all about the doctrine of Creation as well! The book has six sections, or units. Section Two is all about the story of Creation.
Check out the lessons in section two of the Bible study:
- Let There Be Light! (Day 1) Genesis 1:3-5; 2 Corinthians 4:6
- The Sky Above (Day 2) Genesis 1:6-8; Jeremiah 10:12
- Soil and Potatoes (Day 3) Genesis 1:9-13; Psalm 104:14
- Time for the Universe (Day 4) Genesis 1:14-19; Psalm 104:19-23
- Creatures That Swim and Fly (Day 5) Genesis 1:20-23; Psalm 104:16-17, 24-25
- Beasts of the Earth and People (Day 6) Genesis 1:24-27
Through teaching, notebooking boxes, and three Bible verse puzzles per lesson, your kids will learn all about what the Bible says about the story of Creation.
Lessons from the Story of Creation in Genesis
Your kids will learn a number of important facts as they study the story of Creation. Such as:
- Moses was the author of Genesis. They’ll learn important facts about Moses, too.
- God’s Word is inspired–it is his Word, written down by his chosen people. Moses was a prophet of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, so he was able to tell the story of Creation even though he wasn’t there. God told him what to write.
- God created the heavens and the earth in an orderly way. Plants can’t live without light, and animals can’t live without plants. God created the world so that each living thing had just what it needed to survive.
- God created light out of darkness, and he shines in our hearts. Jesus is the light!
- God created everything by his wisdom and understanding.
- God’s steadfast love for those who fear him is as high as the heavens are above the earth.
- God cares for his creatures. His orderly creation was “built” in order to make a home for his animals and people.
- Our God is incredibly creative–look at all the types of fish and birds he made. He is also powerful–he spoke the universe into being. God is eternal, uncreated, and worthy of praise.
Those are just a few of the lessons your preteens will learn right from Scripture as they study the story of Creation. Plus, they will learn the inductive Bible study method, which they will use for a lifetime of Bible study. With puzzle-based Bible study, kids can become Bible Investigators in an exciting way that doesn’t feel like work.
