Have you noticed lately that our world is upside down, inside out, and backward?
It is.
As Christians, we know that our God is an orderly God. His created order for our world and civilization is good, just, and right. In fact, right at the beginning of the Bible, God set up the Creation mandate and Creation ordinances. Mandate and ordinances are big words, aren’t they? When we boil it down, God gave us good gifts at Creation.
Bible Investigators: Creation is a 6-unit, puzzle-based Bible study for 8-12 year olds. Your kids will have a great time learning about God’s good Creation gifts in Section Five of their study.
The Gifts from God our Kids Need to Know About
More than ever, we can see the need for our kids to learn about God’s good Creation gifts. No one receives a precious gift from their loving father to throw it in the gutter. And, no one who has received valuable gifts will exchange them for cheap plastic trinkets.
When we help our kids understand the fabulous gifts God has given us, we help them treasure his created order. Our kids will learn to see the world as God made it–right side up, right side out, and forward. Below are five very important things our kids must know about the gifts God has given us.
1) Every Good Gift Is from God
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. – James 1:17, ESV
A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. – John 3:27b, ESV
Your tween Bible investigators will examine what Jesus says about the gifts our Father in heaven give to us, and consider what it means to be a doer of God’s Word. They will examine verses about God’s gifts, and apply Scripture to their lives as they learn to recognize and respond to God’s gifts.
2) God Blesses Us
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. ” – Genesis 1:28-29, ESV
Your children will learn about the Creation mandate, God’s blessing on his people, and his cultural command. They will consider the meaning of the word blessing, and think about what it means to be a caretaker. Then they’ll uncover what the words subdue and dominion mean as they discover new tools Bible investigators use to examine a text.
3) God Gives Us the Sabbath
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work… For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” – Exodus 20:8-10a, 11, ESV
Your kids will take a look at Genesis 2:1-13, and take a look at God’s command to keep the Sabbath in the Ten Commandments. They will learn about God’s created order from Ecclesiastes. Children will also learn why most Christians now celebrate a day of worship and rest which John called the Lord’s Day in Revelation. Your young Bible investigators will also consider the admonishment about neglecting gathering together on the Lord’s Day from Hebrews and consider the meaning of the word holy.
4) God Gives Us Work
The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. – Genesis 2:15, ESV
Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread,
but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty. – Proverbs 28:19, ESVWhatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. – Colossians 3:23-24, ESV
Work is a good blessing from God. Your children will explore Scripture to discover the work of God in Creation, and to learn how we are made in his likeness, to labor with joy. They will uncover clues to discover the job that God gave to Adam, and to find God’s promises about the consequences of working and not working. They will reflect on the rewards of work, as well.
5) God Gives Us Marriage
In Genesis 2:18-24, God creates man and woman, and gives us the good gift of marriage between a man and a woman. Your kids will learn about God’s plan for marriage and family, and consider how the Fall may have impacted their life or the life of someone they love. They will also consider the fact that adoption is a good and biblical gift from God. Last, they will consider how they can live in gratitude for God’s good Creation gifts.
On a personal note: When I wrote Wonderfully Made: God’s Story of Life from Conception to Birth, it was my hope and prayer that children would learn about God’s wonderful care and plan for life in the womb. I hoped this knowledge of God’s Word would help kids later make loving, godly choices. In the same way, I pray that the study of God’s good Creation gifts will help children rejoice in God’s good plan. I also pray they will recognize counterfeit offerings from the world as a trap that will only bring them pain. The knowledge of God’s plan for our lives is essential for our children as they grow toward adulthood.
Bible Investigators: Creation has six sections, or units, each with four to six lessons. Each lesson has teaching, notebooking spaces, and three Bible verse puzzles. The book makes a great six-week unit study on the doctrine of Creation!
