We don’t just want our kids to be healthy physically. We want them to develop habits for their spiritual health, as well.
When I developed the Spiritual Disciplines Calendar for your kids, I concentrated on three daily spiritual habits we should help our kids develop as they grow:
- Reading God’s Word
- Praying
- Memorizing God’s Word
This fun “Squirrel Away God’s Word” bookmark craft will help your kids remember that memorizing Scripture is an important part of any spiritually healthy daily routine.
And, they can use their new bookmarks to mark their places in their Bible Investigators: Creation book. It’s a fun, puzzle-based Bible study that will help them actually squirrel away God’s Word!
Squirrel Away God’s Word Bookmark Craft for Kids
Before beginning your bookmark craft, read Psalm 119:11 as a family. In the ESV, it says:
I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
Talk about:
- A squirrel stores nuts in special places during the summer so they will have plenty to eat in the winter. That’s why we use the saying “squirrel away” to say that someone is storing up for the future a little at a time.
- What does Psalm 119:11 tell us we should do with God’s Word?
- How does storing up Scripture in our hearts help us in the future?
- What is something you can do each day to help you squirrel away God’s Word in your heart?
Use your bookmark craft to remember that we can store God’s Word in our hearts a little each day!
Your 8-12 year olds will love this puzzle-based Bible study on the doctrine of Creation!

Creating Your Squirrel Away God’s Word Bookmark Craft for Kids
1) Print and cut out the template pieces and labels.
Print the templates and labels from the step-by-step instructions onto white cardstock and cut out the pieces. Then, trace the template pieces onto colored cardstock in and cut out the pieces.
2) Create your squirrels.
Trace your template pieces onto colored cardstock to create the bodies and accents of your squirrels, as shown.
Glue the squirrel cheeks to the lower half of the face. Then glue the belly onto the middle bottom part of the body. Use a permanent marker to color in the dark part of the eyes.
Glue the head to the body.
Glue the shoulders of the upper legs to the outside of the upper body. The legs should be angled inward and down a bit so they can grab the book page.
Glue the inside of the tail in the center of the fluffy, larger tail. Then, glue the end of the tail to the back of the body.
Use a permanent marker to draw a nose in the bow of the cheeks, as shown. Next, glue the eyes, cheeks, and a small rectangle for teeth on the squirrel’s face.
Use a permanent marker to add a little mouth and to outline the teeth.
3) Apply your Squirrel Away God’s Word labels.
Cut out the label of your child’s choosing, and glue it to the squirrel’s belly.
4) Have your kids use their bookmark craft to mark their place in Bible Investigators: Creation.
To use their squirrel bookmarks, your children will slide a squirrel behind the page they’d like to mark, with the upper legs on the front of the page and the squirrel’s lower body behind the page.
Your children can use their Bible Investigators puzzle-based Bible study as they truly “work” to squirrel away God’s Word in their hearts!
