In the beginning, God gave his people good Creation gifts. One of those gifts was the gift of labor. God gave Adam the task of naming the animals and caring for the garden.
We want our children to value and enjoy the labor God has given them to do. Sometimes that is easier said than done!
The Bible has a lot to say about God’s good gift of work. It also has a lot to say about laziness.
Help your kids consider how they work for the Lord with this fun Proverbs 26:13 craft.
A Lion in the Streets | Proverbs 26:13
Read Proverbs 26:13 as a family before you begin your craft.
The book of Proverbs gives us archetypal people to learn about, and we get to see the outcome of their life choices.
For example, in Proverbs the habitually lazy person is referred to as the sluggard. (What an awful name!)
Some of the examples Proverbs gives of the sluggard are humorous. In fact, Scripture makes it easy for us, as parents, to discuss how the small, daily life choices of “the sluggard” result in poor character and undesirable life results.
Proverbs 26:13 gives us a humorous look at the excuse that “the sluggard” employs to avoid the work they don’t want to do. In the ESV, Proverbs 26:13 says:
The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road!
There is a lion in the streets!”
As you make your craft, discuss:
- Does it make sense to put off doing the work God gave us to do because there might be a lion in the streets?
- Brainstorm some excuses you might use to avoid God’s good gift of work.
- Read Colossians 3:17 together. As followers of Jesus, how should we treat work?
Be sure to put your lion craft somewhere you will see it often!

Supplies Needed to Make Your Proverbs 26:13 Lion Craft
You’ll just need a few things to complete your craft! The example is made with wooden spoons and felt. You can substitute plastic spoons and colored cardstock if you prefer.
- Templates
- Colored Cardstock
- White Cardstock
- Wooden Spoon
- Pencil
- Felt
- Twine
- Scissors
- Craft Glue
- Permanent Markers
Creating the A Lion in the Streets Craft
1) Print Your Templates and Copywork Cards.
2) Create the Lion Craft.
Using craft glue, attach the ears to the front side of the spoon. Glue the tip of the tail to the tail, as shown.
Cut a small slit at the bottom of the mane, in the middle, as shown.
Slide the handle of the spoon into the slit in the mane, with the back of the spoon still facing up.
Glue the front of the spoon to the mane.
Glue the loose end of the twine to the top of the spoon handle, as shown.
Wrap the twine around the handle, gluing it on as you go.
Glue the lion tail to the lower back of the spoon handle.
Use permanent markers to give the lion a face. You can add little cheeks, whiskers, and a nose if you’d like.
3) Copy Proverbs 26:13 and Complete Your Lion Craft.
Hang your child’s Bible verse copywork lion somewhere they will be reminded that we do the work God puts in front of us, with no fear of lions in the streets!
