The Best High School Bible Curriculum for Your Homeschool

Looking for the best high school Bible curriculum for your homeschool? Your family will love this trip through the Bible!

The Best High School Bible Curriculum for Your Homeschool
In high school, our teens are preparing for life in the adult world. As Christian parents, we want our kids to leave home knowing and understanding God’s Word.

I wanted to read through the Bible cover-to-cover with our teens in their high school years, and I wanted them to be able to understand the modern day attacks on Scripture, and the defense of God’s Word, at an adult level. I wrote Bible Road Trip™  for the high school level as an open-and-go resource that allowed me to easily read and discuss the Bible with my high schoolers. It was easy, too, to schedule their weekly assignments so they could learn more about Scripture from wonderful resources.

With Bible Road Trip™, our high school students read through the Bible cover-to-cover in just three years. They memorized verses, read about the background and doctrine involved in each book of the Bible, learned about and prayed for every nation in the world, and learned to teach what they learned to others.

Your high schoolers can also take a three-year trip through God’s Word, learning more about God, his plan for our salvation, and what he requires of his people.

The Best High School Bible Curriculum for Your Homeschool

Bible Road Trip™ for your high school students allows you to spend time each week exploring God’s Word as a family. The level your high schoolers will study at:

  1. Rhetoric | This level is intended for grades 10-12. Families will read the entire text of Scripture in three years.

Notes on using the Rhetoric high school level in your family:

  1. Some books, like Genesis, will involve more daily reading. Weeks that involve extra reading can be spread over two weeks, if it fits your family’s schedule better.
  2. For 9th graders, I suggest using the Dialectic level, then moving to the Rhetoric level in 10th grade.

The curriculum uses classical Christian education principles as the underlying philosophy. Your high school aged teens are excited about arguing their points and teaching truth to others. Their brains are ready to apply what they’re learning not only to their own lives, but in discussions with others. This is the perfect time to help your teens think deeply about Scripture, to give them important Bible verses to memorize, and to teach them to talk to others about truths that matter. As they learn the arguments modern day theologians have used to undermine the doctrine of Scripture, and the flaws in those arguments, your teens will become prepared to handle assaults on their faith in the public square. They will learn, too, about the nations of the world and the obstacles to the gospel as they pray for missions throughout the globe.

As your teen matures into adulthood, your family can take them through the Bible cover-to-cover before they graduate. The Rhetoric level curriculum will teach your teens to study Scripture faithfully, setting a rhythm for daily Bible reading in their lives.

Each year of the three-year Bible Road Trip™ curriculum involves 32-weeks of study. Each week moves students through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, in a unit study style method, with students studying books of the Bible for one to five weeks per book.

  1. Bible Road Trip™ Year One covers the books of law and history (Genesis to Esther).
  2. Bible Road Trip™ Year Two covers the books of poetry and prophecy (Job to Malachi).
  3. Bible Road Trip™ Year Three covers the books of the New Testament (Matthew to Revelation).

To help you get the most out of your studies as a family, Bible Road Trip™ has an array of fun coordinating weekly activities:

  •  Researching the section of the Bible you’re studying
  •  Reading and discussing the Bible
  •  Memorizing Scripture
  •  Writing about your studies
  •  Praying for the nations
  •  Suggestions for further study
  •  Teaching others about what you’ve learned

The Rhetoric / High School (grades 10-12) curriculum use a few additional resources to help you teach the Bible to your kids:

  1. A physical Bible | You can choose the version you’d like. Our family gave each child an adult ESV Study Bible when they turned seven. Our adult children are still using those Bibles!
  2. Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible by Danika Cooley | This book is your crash course to teach the Bible to your kids. You will learn both strategies and tips to teach Scripture to your kids.
  3. Encountering the Old Testament: A Christian Survey (Fourth Edition, 2024) by Bill T. Arnold and Bryan E. Beyer | Your high school students will explore the Old Testament using a beginning-level seminary text. This accessible resource will help your high schoolers understand the modern assaults on Scripture, and how we know God’s Word is trustworthy. This resource is used for Year One and Year Two.
  4. Encountering the New Testament: A Historical and Theological Survey (Fourth Edition, 2022) by Walter A. Elwell and Robert W. Yarbrough | Your high school students will explore the New Testament using a beginning-level seminary text. This accessible resource will help your high schoolers understand the modern assaults on Scripture, and how we know God’s Word is trustworthy. This resource is used for Year Three.
  5. Operation World: The Definitive Prayer Guide to Every Nation (7th Edition, 2010) by Jason Mandryk| Over the course of three years, high school students will read about–and pray for–every nation on earth. Your high schoolers will learn about people groups, politics, economics, and religions in each country, and uncover a list of prayers needed for the people of each country.
  6. How We Got the Bible by Timothy Paul Jones, PhD | This great book helps middle school students understand the Holy Spirit-inspired writing of the Old and New Testaments, the doctrine of Scripture, cannonization of the Bible, and the translation of Scripture into english. Your middle school students will learn, too, about the surviving manuscripts of Scripture.
  7. My Timeline Notebooking Journal | By fourth grade, children are ready to begin recording dates, and understanding how historical events overlap. Your kids can use this valuable resource to understand how history and scriptural stories interact, as they learn that God’s Word is rooted in actual history.
  8. Drive Thru History: Holy Land videos | These fun videos
  9. Additional Videos | For Year One, there are three additional videos recommended.

With Bible Road Trip™, your teens will have a clear vision of the overarching themes of Scripture in just three years:

  1. Who God is
  2. Our fallen nature
  3. God’s sovereignty
  4. God’s plan for salvation through Christ
  5. Our relationship with God

Bible Road Trip™ is an open-and-go curriculum that will take your kids through God’s Word in three years.

Bible Memory for High School

Your high school students will memorize a verse each week.

The Best High School Bible Curriculum for Your Homeschool

Bible Road Trip™ Bible memory verse cards make this task simple for you as a parent, and fun for your high schoolers. With beautiful artwork, and lines of Scripture arranged in beats, your kids can easily memorize God’s Word, one line at a time.

Notes on memorization:

  1. Rhetoric students often have been through the Lower Grammar, Upper Grammar, and/or Dialectic levels. Some of the memorization will be review, and they will be building on prior knowledge. If, however, students just beginning with Bible Road Trip™, or those who struggle with memorization, should start with just one or two verses each week.
  2. As they practice memorizing, your teens can add additional weekly verses. You will find a chapter on memorization tips and strategies, aimed at helping your teens based on their learning style, in Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible.
  3. Teens who follow the Rhetoric memorization schedule will memorize verses from throughout the Bible, and–over the course of three years–will also memorize the first 12 chapters of Romans.
