Asking God for Help with Prayer for Deliverance

Prayer for deliverance is the act of asking God for help. Scripture records prayers for deliverance and how God rescues his people.

Asking God for Help with Prayer for Deliverance

Have you ever asked God for deliverance?

The word deliverance means to be rescued, or to be set free. Every Christian who has turned to Jesus in belief and repented of her sin has been set free. There are times in life, though, that even Christians need to be delivered from our circumstances–or maybe even from people.

Sometimes our situation is the result of our own unwise or sinful actions, but sometimes life goes off the rails for reasons outside our control. Either set of troubles–whether due to sin or to life’s events–presents the right time to go to our great God to ask for help.

I can remember the panic I felt during the housing market crash of 2008–the Great Recession. We had four kids, I was really (expensively) ill, our house had to be fixed after a devastating event, and my husband’s industry was terribly affected. Each day, I would spread our bills on my desk and show them to God. I prayed for deliverance–for rescue. Honestly, I couldn’t see any way out of our situation. At. All.

God did. He can see your situation as well. Have you asked God for help?

How to Ask God for Help

Little by little, God’s people showed up at our door. They dropped off food, they left envelopes of cash, they drove me to the pharmacy and paid for my meds. Guys from our church showed up with hammers, supplies, and even their own employees. It was amazing. No one helped more than they were able, but each gift helped prevent our financial and medical demise for just one more month. It took a long time for the economy in our area to recover, but God kept us and preserved us throughout the entire trauma.

Our great God delivered us.

Take a look at what the psalms have to say about asking God for help (all in the ESV) :

You are a hiding place for me;
     you preserve me from trouble;
     you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah (Psalm 32:7)

When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
     and delivers them out of all their troubles. (Psalm 34:17)

I have told the glad news of deliverance
     in the great congregation;
behold, I have not restrained my lips,
     as you know, O Lord.
I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;
     I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
     from the great congregation. (Psalm 40:9-10)

“Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
     and perform your vows to the Most High,
and call upon me in the day of trouble;
     I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” (Psalm 50:14-15)

There are more verses about deliverance in just the psalms alone.

The amazing news is that in the day of trouble, you can call on God. He will deliver you and you will glorify him. That is because you will not hide his deliverance from all your troubles. You will speak of his faithfulness, his steadfast love, and of your salvation.

God’s Word is full of the stories of people calling out to God for deliverance. Learning about how they asked God for help can strengthen your faith, and help you pray biblically.
