Body Safety Rules for Kids | God Made All of Me

I’d like to thank New Growth Press for sending me God Made All of Me by Justin S. & Lindsey A. Holcomb in return for my honest review.

Child sexual abuse is a heart-breaking thing.

I know we all want to protect our children, but most abuse is pretty sneaky, and while it can happen quickly, there is often a period of “grooming” leading up to the abuse when children can still seek intervention. That’s because abuse is often meted out by those we trust.

Body Safety For Kids

According to Justin and Lindsey Holcomb, one in four women and one in six men are assaulted during their lifetime–15% under the age of 12, and 29% between the ages of 12 and 17.

Friends, we need to be diligent. Part of that diligence must include educating our children, so that they understand how to get help when they are uncomfortable.

Body Safety Rules for Kids

Let’s talk for a moment about helping our kids protect themselves, shall we?
My husband and I like to take a two-pronged approach:
1) We want to equip our kids to recognize grooming and other odd or abusive behavior and to know they should report it.
The book God Made All of Me: A Book to Help Children Protect Their Bodies is the best resource I’ve found to help kids understand appropriate relationships.
2) We want to put appropriate guidelines and boundaries — body safety rules for our kids — in place for our kids to help protect them. Abuse can happen in just a moment.
As a parent, this meant we did not allow kids to play in rooms in our home or the homes of others with the door closed. We did not allow girls and boys in the same room.
As kids got older, we didn’t allow boys and girls alone together outside or alone on dates. There has to be a chaperone for the protection of everyone involved. This helps not only against abuse, but also against unfounded accusations gaining ground.
At church (I was a volunteer Sunday school coordinator and teacher for years–and the assistant manager of a residential home), we used the 2-on-1 rule. Children were always in public–windows in the doors, bathroom doors propped open, etc. If there was a need to walk a child from one place to another, there were two children with one adult, or two adults with one child. Always. In the infant and toddler room, there was never just one adult or teen.

These boundaries — body safety rules for kids — were imperfect, but they helped protect our kids from grooming and / or abuse.

God Made All of Me

That’s exactly what God Made All of Me: A Book to Help Children Protect Their Bodies by Justin S. and Lindsey A. Holcomb (New Growth Press, 2015) will help you do, in an appropriate, God-honoring way.

Trish Mahoney’s bright and cheerful illustrations help keep the conversation light.

Body Safety Rules for Kids | God Made All of Me

God Made All of Me teaches children that God made their bodies, and their bodies are good. It then discusses appropriate touch, how to handle unwanted touch (even innocent unwanted touch), how to get help in the case of unwanted touch, and the difference between secrets and surprises.

Two of the spreads are dedicated to educating parents and caregivers on how to continue to educate children so that they can help protect their bodies, and discusses why it’s necessary to do so.

God Made All of Me is unique, well-written, and an important book for children. I strongly encourage you to use it to educate your kids.
