What’s not to love? Our amazing Creator God created amazing, fabulous, intricate creatures, habitats, even planets!
If your kids–ages 6-10–enjoy learning about God’s creation, I think they’ll love reading about God and science in Louie Giglio’s Indescribable devotional series.
Devotionals for Kids about God and Science
I often share about books that focus on theology, Christian history, and the Bible. Most of the books I’ve written for kids are focused on helping kids understand what Scripture says about a particular issue. The Indescribable series for 6-10 year olds from Louie Giglio is different, and–if you’re expecting different–they’re really a lot of fun. My kids would have loved them when they were growing up!
There are three devotionals in the Indescribable series:
- Indescribable: 100 Devotions about God and Science
- How Great is Our God: 100 Indescribable Devotions about God and Science
- The Wonder of Creation: 100 More Devotions about God and Science
Each of the devotions is two pages with a title, a verse (usually from the International Children’s Bible, but also from the CEV, NIV, NCV, NLT, and NKJV), fascinating information about something science-related, a biblical personal application, a short prayer, and a sidebar with another scientific fact.
The devotions cover four major topics:
- Space
- Earth
- Animals
- People
The little articles and sidebars on science and God are fascinating and really fun to read. If your kids are at all interested in God’s amazing creation, they’re going to love learning more about how God designed our world, universe, bodies, and the creatures around us. The devotions are surface-level. I don’t say that because it’s a terrible thing–I say it because these books are great elementary-level science devotionals with a biblical worldview and helpful reminders to care for God’s world, to love God, and to treat other people with care. You’ll still want to study the Bible and theology with your kids to help them deepen their faith and learn more about God’s Word, using additional resources–like the Bible, Bible Road Trip™, and many of the great books available about the Bible and theology for kids, ages 4-7 and 8-12.
That expectation set, these devotionals about God and science are wonderful for peaking your child’s interest in God’s amazing world. Homeschooling friends, I suggest using these as lower elementary science with a biblical worldview, rather than as a Bible class. Your older kids may really enjoy reading them on their own, as well.
I won’t quote the devotions exactly (the writing is great, though!), but I will outline four of the devotions so you can get a good feel for the books. For reference, I’ve read Indescribable and The Wonder of Creation from cover-to-cover.
- Space: “Astronomical Grace” (Indescribable, pages 44-45)
Verse: Romans 8:1 (ICB): “Those who are in Christ Jesus are not judged guilty.”
Science and God devotion: Louie Giglio tells kids how huge space is–and God made all of it. There are facts about the Whirlpool Galaxy and the X-Structure, which is a massive black hole. Giglio then pivots to talking about the cross as a reminder of God’s astronomical love and grace.
Prayer: We thank God for his astronomical grace that covers even our biggest sins.
Be Amazed Sidebar: Giglio shares more information about black holes. - Earth: “When the Earth Moved” (The Wonder of Creation, pages 116-117)
Verse: Hebrews 13:16 (ICB): “Do not forget to do good to others. And share with them what you have.”
Science and God devotion: Louie Giglio tells kids how Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee was formed in the early 1800s. The lake was created from disaster, and is a beautiful habitat. Great beauty comes out of disaster when God’s people love and help those who are hurting. There are a few ideas about how to help others during disaster.
Prayer: We ask God to remind us to pray during disaster, and show us how to help others.
Be Amazed Sidebar: Children will learn about the Richter scale, and about the most powerful earthquake measured. - Animals: “What a Tangled Web We Weave” (Indescribable, pages 176-177)
Verse: Proverbs 12:22 (NLT): “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth.”
Science and God devotion: Your kids will learn about the different kinds of spiders, and how they hunt and eat. Then, Louie Giglio talks about how a spiderweb is a deadly trap, just like a lie. Lies become webs of lies, so don’t spin the first one.
Prayer: We ask God for the courage and strength to tell the truth.
Be Amazed Sidebar: Your kids will learn about how wolf spiders hunt. - People: “Say ‘Cheese’!” (The Wonder of Creation, pages 154-155)
Verse: Colossians 4:2 (ICB): “Continue praying and keep alert. And when you pray, always thank God.”
Science and God devotion: Louie Giglio tells kids all about teeth. He talks about how enamel is the hardest substance in your body. It protects your teeth, but you still have to take care of them. Then, he explains we must care for our faith, too. We must read the Bible, talk to God and praise him daily.
Prayer: We ask God to forgive us for forgetting to take care of our faith. And, express our desire to love God more.
Be Amazed Sidebar: Giglio shares about why spit is so important to our bodies.
I really like these books. The illustrations by Nicola Anderson are bright, fun, and the characters are ethnically diverse. There are great photographs, too. There were a few points where I would have explained our family’s understanding of theology (mostly how we hear the Holy Spirit speak to us–I would say it is just through Scripture and our conscience), but I didn’t find anything I would have been uncomfortable with my kids reading. My boys, especially, would have loved the plethora of fascinating science facts!
Your 8-12 year olds will love this puzzle-based Bible study on the doctrine of Creation!
