Best Bible Story Books for Kids
I’ve read through each of these Bible storybooks. It’s important to me that children have a solid understanding of God’s overarching story of Scripture, and these three Bible storybooks provide that for kids while remaining faithful to the Bible in the retelling of God’s Word.
365 Great Bible Stories by Carine Mackenzie
I like 365 Great Bible Stories by Carine Mackenzie. The book is recommended as a read-aloud for ages 5-7 and for up to age 12 as a read-alone book. The pictures don’t encompass the page, and there is too much text to make this suitable for young toddlers. However, I think that it’s a great resource for families with preschool and kindergarten aged kids.
365 Great Bible Stories is the text used for the Preschool and Kindergarten level of Bible Road Trip™ in the read-along section. So, if you have younger children and plan to participate in that, you’ll want to get a copy!
The book is divided into six sections:
- Creation, the Fall, the Flood and the Exodus (Genesis-Exodus)
- Joshua, Judges and the Kings (Numbers-2 Chronicles, Psalms, and Jeremiah)
- Prophets, a Prophetess, a Queen and a Priest (1 Chronicles, Ezra-Proverbs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Jonah, and Luke)
- The Life of Jesus (Matthew-John)
- The Apostles and the Early Church (Acts)
- Epistles, Revelation and God’s Word (1 and 2 Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Hebrews, James, and Revelation)
Christian Focus Publications does not publish images of Jesus.

The Biggest Story Bible Storybook by Kevin DeYoung
I love this Bible storybook. I love the voice and language used, I love the colors, and I love the way stories are addressed.
I love the commentary, too. How many stories in Scripture do you–as an adult–read and wonder, Why did that happen? What does it mean? How does this help me understand Jesus better? Well, your children are going to read The Biggest Story Bible Storybook, and they’ll have a great understanding about how the Bible fits together into a great big story told to us by God.
The Biggest Story Bible Storybook is a whopping 530 pages, roughly divided in half between the Old and New Testament. Each story is around four pages, with lots of pictures, and a short prayer at the end.
The book is divided into seven sections:
- Part 1: The Pentateuch (Genesis – Deuteronomy)
- Part 2: History (Joshua – Esther)
- Part 3: Poetry (Job – Song of Solomon)
- Part 4: The Prophets (Isaiah – Malachi)
- Part 5: The Gospels (Matthew – John)
- Part 6: Acts and Epistles (Acts – Jude)
- Part 7: Revelation
There are highly stylized images of Jesus in this storybook. Read the review for Kevin DeYoung’s thoughts.

God’s Big Promises Bible Storybook by Carl Laferton
God’s Big Bible Promises Storybook helps kids find five promises made or kept by God using colorful icons. Kids love seek-and-find activities, and the icons make it fun to connect the promises God made and how he kept them.
Carl Laferton helps kids identify when God makes a promise and when God keeps a promise in five areas. God promises (and fulfills promises):
- To RESCUE
- About his PEOPLE
- About a good LAND to live in
- That he will bring JOY — happiness
- About a KING
The wonderful thing about this Bible storybook is that it will help children have a better understanding of how our amazing God coordinated Scripture to tell a great, big, overarching story. I enjoyed the writing, and I found it to be faithful to Scripture. I especially liked how Carl Laferton made the concept of an idol more understandable for young children by calling them “not-gods.”
There are images of Jesus in this storybook.
