Do your kids know the story of the Exodus out of Egypt? Why Did the Exodus Happen? is a fun book for 7-12 year olds about who God is.

In his classic book, Knowing God, theologian J.I. Packer (1926-2020) wrote:
The character of God is today, and always will be, exactly what it was in Bible times. God is forever what at that moment, three thousand years ago, He told Moses that He was.
We want our kids to know God, and to understand his attributes. In fact, who God is happens to be one of the primary themes of the Bible. We teach theology to our kids, not because it is a departure from Scripture, but because it is a way to distill the main themes of Scripture into lessons they will remember forever.
One of the best ways to teach theology to our kids is through story. In fact, we learn that way, too. I think it’s the reason God gave us so many stories in the Bible. We learn about who God is as we read the stories of God interacting with his people.
Why Did the Exodus Happen?
In this world, there are a great many things to know. We can learn about algebra, art, biology, and even rocket science. But, no library of knowledge in this world is more important than knowing the one true God.

The Exodus from Egypt occurs in the book of Exodus in the Bible. It is followed by the giving of God’s law in the form of the Ten Commandments in Exodus chapter 20.
Prior to the Exodus, the Israelites were the heirs of Abraham, chosen by God as his people. After 430 years in Egypt, the people of Israel had multiplied into a great nation, but the Egyptians had become cruel masters, enslaving the people of Israel. They cried out to God and God rescued them through his prophet, Moses. Along the way, God trained the Israelites to be a people who worshiped him. He taught them to worship rightly, and God taught them about who he is.
Our kids, too, can learn who God is through the story of the Exodus from Egypt. God is faithful. He desires to be known to us. God is sovereign, our Savior, and he is with us. There’s more: God is our all-powerful provider, he’s victorious, and he is holy. These are the lessons that God taught to his people, the Israelites, and they are the lessons he teaches us today through the story of the Exodus. That’s the lesson we want our kids to take away from reading about God’s rescue of his people.
The Story of the Exodus out of Egypt
The story of the Exodus out of Egypt, led by Moses under God’s sovereign hand, is the story of the birth of a nation. It’s also the story of who God is.
Though God has many attributes, some communicable (our kids can display these attributes in a human way) and some incommunicable (only God has these attributes), during the Exodus God shared a number of his attributes with his people.
The Exodus happened so that we can better know who God is. Through the story of the Exodus, we learn:
- God keeps his promises, and the Bible is full of his promises to us.
- About God’s name, “I Am Who I Am”–what it means and how it is translated.
- That God is in control of everything: creation, nations, kings, and people. His will is going to be done!
- God provides a way of salvation for his people.
- God desires to be with us. He leads us, accepts and directs our worship, and disciplines us as his children.
- God is powerful over the sea, armies, and even nations.
- God provides for our needs. He hears us when we cry out to him.
- God is the victorious over all. Not only does he plan events in history, he also makes his power known so that his name will be proclaimed.
- God is holy, and his laws teach us how to love God and love others.
The story of the Exodus out of Egypt is a story about who God is, and about how he cares for his people. It’s a story our children need to know.

Christian Biographies for Kids | Christian History for Kids | Theology for Kids
Christian History Matters for Our Kids.
History matters. Now, more than ever, we see how important it is for our children to know and understand history and the Bible.
Here’s why:
- God is the sovereign ruler of all things. It’s important for our kids to see his hand in the history of nations and in the lives of both peasants and kings.
- Christian history is the story of our family history. Our kids get to see how people who love Jesus follow him.
- Understanding history can help our kids learn historic and biblical theology. They learn what the Bible says and what that means for us. They also see when the study of Scripture has taken important turns that have changed the Church.
- Reading Christian biographies and history can be a wonderful way for kids to think outside their own time and culture. God’s Church spans centuries and includes people from every nation.
- Christian biographies help kids consider their own faith, walk with Jesus, and the impact their witness may one day have on others–and on history.
