Sound familiar? Little people love repetition. They love listening to the same book over and over again until they know it by heart.
I’m a huge advocate of using age-appropriate brain development to really help our kids learn about God, the Bible, and the gospel. So, I’m excited to share a really valuable resource you can use with your 3-5 year olds. While you’re reading it to them (over and over!), they’ll not only learn their ABCs, they’ll also just naturally memorize 27 Bible verses–and the meaning of each verse. And, he has a book about Bible numbers that will help your littles learn their numbers 1-12, along with how numbers are used in Bible stories.
ABC Bible Verses for Kids
Jonathan Gibson, a PhD, ordained Presbyterian minister, and Associate Professor of Old Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, has written a wonderful ABC picture book for your 3-5 year olds. With bright, exciting graphics by Mike Mullen, your children are sure to ask to read their Bible ABCs often.
Each page of the book features a letter, an important short verse (in ESV, NIV, and CSB), and a sentence explaining the verse.
For instance, the Y page says:
“Jesus Christ is the same YESTERDAY and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
“Everything in the world changes–but Jesus never changes.”
You can see how your young kids could easily learn 27 foundational verses by heart in a short period of time, without even trying!
Why 27 verses, when there are 26 letters of the alphabet? It’s because the book starts with a verse about Bible verses:
“I have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11
Perfect, right?

Jonathan Gibson has written a fabulous companion volume for your 3-5 year olds, all about numbers. With coordinating graphics by Mike Mullen, your children will love learning about numbers in the Bible. The book covers numbers 1-12 and number 100.
Each page of the book features a number, a sentence about where the number is found in the Bible, and a challenge to find 3 objects in that quantity in the illustration.
For instance, the 7 page says:
“In the last book of the Bible we read about 7 lampstands in the 7 churches.”
“Can you find:
7 trumpets?
7 angels?
7 churches?
What a great way to familiarize your littles with biblical themes and to help them start counting!
