Have you ever noticed that it’s really easy for us to forget that the kingdom of God is a great, big family that spans time and geography?
We can easily begin to feel that our time, our place, and our challenges are the only struggles Christians have ever faced. It is easy, too, to forget that God has sovereignly placed each one of us right where we are.
As Christians live for the Lord, they impact the people around them. Sometimes, they change the course of history.
Those are the lessons I wanted to teach my children and, now, my grandchildren.

Do Great Things for God Series
Christian biographies can be a wonderful, uplifting, true way to teach children what it looks like to live for Jesus. Through stories of those who displayed Christ-like character and a purpose to grow God’s kingdom, we can help kids set expectations for what their lives will one day look like, should they follow Jesus.
The growing Do Great Things for God series from The Good Book Company is a wonderful set of books your 4-7 year olds will enjoy. Each biography helps kids connect to the central figure in their childhood, then shares stories from their life, helping kids understand how each person made an impact for the kingdom of God. The language is appropriate and engaging, and hardships are expressed in a way that young kids can understand, without being scary.
For instance, in Helen Roseveare: The Doctor Who Kept Going No Matter What, children learn about a little girl who decided at the young age of eight that she wanted to be a missionary for Jesus. In medical school, Helen clung to Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.” As a doctor, Helen went to school to become a missionary, before being called to serve in the Congo.
The biography is filled with wonderful stories of how Helen lived and served Jesus. My favorite part is when she and the children in her hospital prayed, asking God to send life-saving supplies for a baby-in-need–and those supplies arrived right on time. Honestly, those are always my favorite stories in biographies. We serve a big God and he always answers our prayers, even when we can’t clearly see why he answers us the way he does.
You can also read my review of Fannie Lou Hamer, another book in the Do Great Things for God series.
This is a wonderful series for littles that will teach kids about doing great things for God. They will learn, too, what it looks like to love Jesus and his people.
The Do Great Things for God series is expanding to include men, but you’ll love this video about the series!

Christian Biographies for Kids | Christian History for Kids | Theology for Kids

Christian History Matters for Our Kids.
History matters. Now, more than ever, we see how important it is for our children to know and understand history and the Bible.
Here’s why:
- God is the sovereign ruler of all things. It’s important for our kids to see his hand in the history of nations and in the lives of both peasants and kings.
- Christian history is the story of our family history. Our kids get to see how people who love Jesus follow him.
- Understanding history can help our kids learn historic and biblical theology. They learn what the Bible says and what that means for us. They also see when the study of Scripture has taken important turns that have changed the Church.
- Reading Christian biographies and history can be a wonderful way for kids to think outside their own time and culture. God’s Church spans centuries and includes people from every nation.
- Christian biographies help kids consider their own faith, walk with Jesus, and the impact their witness may one day have on others–and on history.
