When my kids were in the 5 to 8 year old age range, I was always looking for biblically sound resources that would help them learn about Jesus, the Bible, and the gospel. I have been delighted to witness what I feel is a resurgence in good materials available to families.
For a number of years, I spent a lot of my housework time listening to radio sermons from pastors including Alistair Begg, RC Sproul, and John MacArthur. So, when I saw a new devotional book for 5-8 year olds from Alistair Begg, I purchased a copy specifically so I could share it with you.

Our Identity in Christ
In Scripture, there is a lot of attention given to our identity in Christ. God tells us that once we believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, confess our belief with our mouth, and repent of our sin, we are saved eternally.
Then what?
Who do we become? How shall we live?
These are vitally important questions to answer for our kids. We want them to know the truth, right from God’s Word.
Christians are:
- Adopted
- Examples
- Light
- Pilgrims
- Upheld
But, what do these words mean? How can our kids better understand our identity in Christ?

C is for Christian by Alistair Begg
Pastor Alistair Begg’s C is for Christian is more than a picture book. It is an illustrated devotional worthy of twenty-six weeks of study with your littles!
Beautifully illustrated by Emma Skerratt, each two-page spread introduces a new aspect of our identity in Christ, corresponding to a letter of the alphabet. For instance, A stands for Adopted. There is a verse, Romans 8:15, below a truly inventive illustration of the letter A (a father embracing his adopted son, cloaked in a blanket to form an A).
On the right-hand side of the spread, there is a half-page devotional explaining what it means to be adopted by our Father God. Following the devotion are a couple of discussion questions and a prayer.
I love the devotions. They are entirely original, interesting descriptions and stories for children that appropriately explain what each concept means. Alistair Begg’s voice sounds much as it does in his sermons–relatable, gentle, and clear. One feels he is telling stories to his beloved grandchildren, rather than condescending to explain something trivial to kindergarteners. That tone in children’s books is so important!
His devotions include application of each verse, so children understand both their identity in Christ, and how to live out that identity on a day-to-day basis.
If I still had young children, I think this volume would make an excellent spine text for preschool and kindergarten. One way to use it would be to concentrate on a letter each week, re-reading the spread for the letter every day that week. Add in other activities that involve that letter (like Bible playdough and copywork), memorize the supporting verse, and add some applicational activities and crafts throughout the week, and you have a whole lesson plan! You could easily adapt it to a children’s ministry class, as well.
However you use the book, I highly recommend this excellent volume for your home, your school, and your ministry.
Purchase C is for Christian
You’ll definitely want to add a copy of this beautiful volume to your family library–and gift it to families around you. When you do, be sure to grab a copy of Alistair Begg’s coordinating J is for Jesus. After all, knowing Jesus is central to our Christian faith.
