My mom always told me I was going to be a writer, and I was dead set against it. Looking back now at the collection of handwritten stories she tucked into picture books, starting when I was seven, I understand where she got that idea.
Still, until I dedicated my life to serving Christ and to teaching kids about Scripture, I didn’t really feel like I had much to say.
Once I decided my calling–my vocation–is to write for Jesus, I started by writing Bible stories for Focus on the Family’s magazine for 3-7 year olds, Clubhouse Jr.

Focus on the Family Clubhouse Jr. Magazine
My own children loved the magazine, with its bright colors and fun stories, recipes, and games. They looked forward to receiving a copy of Clubhouse Jr. in the mail every month.
Here is what Focus on the Family has to say about the magazine:
You’ll love the way Focus on the Family Clubhouse Jr. reinforces biblical values for children ages 3-7. This award-winning kids’ magazine promotes family closeness and encourages reading and thinking skills. Each monthly issue is jam-packed with creative Bible stories, exciting fiction, entertaining nature features, fun puzzles, silly jokes and more—all designed to give your child a strong spiritual start. Learning about God should always be this much fun!
Writing Bible stories for Focus on the Family was like an education for me. I loved framing a story from Scripture from another perspective, from the viewpoint of an animal, a child, or a minor character in the story.

Bible Stories for Kids from Focus on the Family
It was really fun to receive two new collections from Focus on the Family in the mail with a story I wrote in each book.
Each volume of The Read Again & Again Storybook Bible is a collection of thirty-two of the great Bible stories that have been published in Clubhouse Jr. magazine over the years. Illustrated by Chris Jones, the books have the look and feel of Bible storybooks.
They are a little different than your standard Bible storybooks, however. Each story is written by a different author. They are told from different viewpoints (though some are told more as straight Bible narrative), like from the perspective of nearby animals or children. These storytellers are often given their own names and story lines. In at least one case, a story is set in biblical times with a Scripture verse theme, but it doesn’t really tell a Bible story at all.
Rather than being standard Bible story books, The Read Again and Again Old and New Testament books are a fun collection of stories told about the Bible, set in Bible times. Each story has its own theme and message. The cohesiveness comes from the illustrations.
The authors of the 64 stories about the Bible write for Focus on the Family out of a love for God’s Word and his little people. You may recognize the names of some of the authors as multi-published Christian children’s writers. The authors include:
- Catherine Osornio
- Danika Cooley
- Tim Shoemaker
- Crystal Bowman
- Teri McKinley
- Mike Nappa
- Suzanne Hadley Gosselin
- Jesse Florea
This is a fun set for beginning readers to practice their reading skills, for bedtime read alouds, and for young children to grow in familiarity with the world and times of the Bible.
