Our kids have big questions about God, the Bible, and the Christian faith. Mine asked questions all the time! Now that they’re adults, they tell me about all the questions they never asked, or the assumptions (sometimes pretty funny assumptions) they made.
Though we read the Bible together multiple times together while they were growing up (we used Bible Road Trip™), and read systematic theology as they went through their teen years, there were still questions they had!
Two volumes by Sandy Silverthorne will help you answer the questions kids have about God–before they even ask them!
Bible Questions and Answers for Kids
To be really honest, I am pretty picky about the answers to Bible questions I allow into our house.
I take biblical, historical, and systematic theology seriously… and I want to teach truth to my kids, not an off-brand version of it.
That’s why I was thrilled to discover that the answers in Kids’ Big Questions about God are both fun and well thought out. Honestly, there are some answers to questions like “Will I look the same in heaven? Will my family and friends recognize me?” that we won’t truly understand the answer to until we arrive in God’s presence. Even so, Sandy Silverthorne gives biblical clues to the answer and helps put kids’ minds at ease, while sharing the truth about what we do know about our future forever bodies because of what we know about our resurrected Savior, Jesus.
The gospel is clearly presented in Kids’ Big Questions about God and Scripture is frequently referenced.
There was only one question I would have answered differently, as a Reformed Baptist: “#16: Does God really love everyone? Even if they don’t believe in him?”. If an adult asked me that, I’d probably spend time talking about Romans 9, and Calvin’s exposition on John 3:16. When my kids asked me, I explained the doctrines of grace to them. That said, I didn’t think Silverthorne’s answer was wrong, and he clearly left the door open for those who seem most unlikely to be loved by God to receive salvation in Christ. That’s true, in my experience. Some of the loveliest Christian I know are those who seemed as though they would never be saved. So, absolutely, I would not have hesitated to share this book with my kids, even if the small nuances of some answers were not phrased as I would phrase them. The beauty of living in a great big family of God is that we are all working out our faith with fear and trembling.
Silverthorne’s answers are solid. In situations where we don’t know the answer to a question, he leads kids to biblical clues and helps put them at ease.
Answer Questions Kids Ask about the Bible
Kids’ Big Questions about God and Kids’ Big Questions about Heaven, the Bible, and Other Really Important Stuff each answer 101 Bible questions.
Some of the questions are silly or fun (though still important to our kids!), and some are central to the Christian faith, dealing with the gospel and important doctrine.
Take a look at a few of the questions Sandy Silverthorne answers, inspired by the big questions asked by kids he served at Camp Harlow in Oregon:
- Who created God?
- Who wrote the Bible?
- Is Jesus really God?
- What about dinosaurs? Did they really exist?
- Will there be animals in heaven?
- Did Jesus have any brothers and sisters?
- Why did God create germs?
- Why does God want us to pray?
- What about the people who have never heard of Jesus? What happens to them?
See what I mean? These are great questions!
Throughout the book, kids will find sidebars, discussion questions, journaling questions, and drawing prompts. These are not a regular occurrence, but they occur in places that add to children’s understanding and application of the Scriptural answers given.
Kids’ Big Questions about God and Kids’ Big Questions about Heaven, the Bible, and Other Really Important Stuff are wonderful volumes to use for your family’s morning basket time, evening devotionals, or even to read at lunch. They are also perfect books for your 8-12 year olds to read on their own.
