Unlike stories of individual biblical events, Bible biographies tell the stories of individuals whose lives sometimes stretch over many chapters of biblical narrative. The lives of Bible characters sometimes have important backstories involving their parents or the events that occurred during their lifetime. Kids may also need a little help seeing how the biblical stories of God’s people tie to the gospel and to the coming of Christ.
I, myself, have written several Bible character biographies for the Who What Why series for 7-12 year olds from Christian Focus Publications (for the CF4Kids imprint). When I wrote Who Was Moses?, I included information from four books of the Pentateuch, and also references from throughout Scripture. In Who Were the Disciples?, I worked to harmonize the accounts of the lives of each disciple from throughout the four Gospels, the epistles, and extra biblical information about the missionary exploits of the disciples. I also wove in cultural information from the time of the New Testament. Both books pointed toward the good news of Jesus, and make each person’s life story more accessible to children.
Bible biographies are a wonderful way for children to better understand God’s work in the lives of his people, and to see his hand in history. The Bible Lives series is perfect for 4-7 year olds.
Biographies of Bible Characters
Carine MacKenzie has been retelling Bible stories for a long time. Her new Bible biography series, Bible Lives from CF4Kids, is delightful, modern, and perfect for every family’s library. MacKenzie does a wonderful job narrating the entire life of a Bible character in each book. Because there is a lot of text, these may be books that you read to your little ones over a period of several days.
One of the aspects of Christian Focus picture books I always enjoy is that each book points to the gospel in some way. For example, the last page of Joseph: God’s Dreamer states:
God’s purpose in sending Joseph to Egypt was to save many people, including his family. God’s purpose in sending Jesus to this world was to save the people who believe in him from their sins and give them eternal life.
Likewise, Daniel: The Praying Prince ends with:
Daniel put God first in his life. He loved and served him in every detail. He prayed to him regularly and trusted him to help him always. God loved Daniel very much and used him to speak his words to important people.
Do you love the Lord Jesus and serve him in all the details of your life? We should pray to God regularly and ask him to save us from the danger of the evil that could so easily harm us. The Lord is willing to save all who come to him by faith.
