Teaching the Bible to our kids is vital. Our family likes to come at it from several angles at once.
I’ve mentioned before that in addition to reading through the Bible with the kids using Bible Road Trip™, and doing evening family devotions (which my husband leads), I like to have a book I’m reading with the boys a few days a week that covers the Bible, Christian living, theology, or Christian history.
It’s nice to have a book to read aloud, and I like to keep the kids thinking about these subjects and hearing them from different points of theologically sound views.
God’s Word and You Series
Laura Martin has two new books written in this vein, to help kids ages 8-12 understand how the Bible speaks to subjects that are immediately relevant to their every day lives, like social media and gaming.
I read the first two books, God’s Word and You: What the Bible Says about Family, Friends, and Other Important Stuff and God’s Word and Your Life: What the Bible Says about Social Media, Money and other Exciting Stuff! (CF4K, 2016), to my nearly-13-year-old and my 14-year-old. I think the books are best suited to ages 8-14.
The God’s Word and You series is engaging and interesting in the manner in which they present information and the subjects they take on.
Each chapter covers one area of life relevant to middle grade children. Martin begins by telling a Bible story for several pages that somehow relates to the topic. My boys really enjoyed guessing what biblical story she was telling in the chapters where she did not immediately identify the story or its characters. Martin uses this story to relate other biblical stories and passages to the topic. Some of the connections she makes are really interesting.
After the story section, each chapter has a “But wait, there’s more!” section. Here Martin pulls out additional principles children can learn about the topic at hand. She then sums up these principles in a numbered list. I find that very helpful for the kids–it clarifies what we’ve read and how it applies to them. Following these sections, each chapter has thoughtful study questions and a brief prayer.
I really like the way both of the God’s Word and You books pull principles from Scripture and apply them to a topic that is important to middle grade children. I think my boys were fascinated by the idea that the Bible might say something about social media, TV, or gaming. Rather than issue regulatory principles, Martin goes right to the child’s heart in their day-to-day relationships and actions.

I’m glad I read these short (around 100 pages) books together with my boys. They presented biblical principles in a methodical creative way and we had some good discussions because of the material presented. I recommend Laura Martin’s series!
