The Bible is an exciting adventure story from God. Check out these tips on how to help your kids fall in love with God’s Word!

My nine- and ten-year-old meticulously drew slugs in their journal boxes. Then, they wrote a few notes on how gross slugs are, how they’re covered in mucus, and how cool God is. After all, he created the messy, mucus-covered little lettuce-eaters. God is really creative, they scribbled in the margins.
As Christian parents, we hold a high view of the Bible. That means that we believe Scripture is inspired by God, inerrant, and infallible. God’s Word is our authority–we obey his commands to us.
When we present the Bible to our eight- to twelve-year-olds , we want them to fall in love with it.
How do we help our kids love God’s Word while conveying our high view of Scripture? Easy! By appealing to the innate sense of wonder and curiosity God instilled in our kids, we can help them embark on the wonderful adventure of knowing our great God even better.
- After all, God’s Word is an adventure. Our kids have the opportunity to explore the wonder of who God is and what he’s done through the pages of Scripture.
- God’s Word is a story. The Bible is a true history that builds from Creation and the Fall through the history of Israel, to the Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection, through to eternity to come.
- God’s Word is also a fun mystery our kids can unravel. We can explore the depths of God’s Word throughout our entire lives, learning how it fits together, working to understand the great themes of Scripture.
Check out a few tips to help your middle grade kids learn to fall in love with God’s Word.

Help Kids Fall in Love with God’s Word
Our eight- to twelve-year-olds have brains that are quickly developing and growing. Because of that, third to sixth graders love gathering knowledge and facts. Memorization comes easier for kids in the middle grades, and they often remember what they’ve learned at this age for a long time–often into adulthood. Your eight- to twelve-year olds are likely highly visual, relational, and creative. Kids this age love adventure, exploration, challenges, and interesting information.
Engaging the active minds of our middle grade kids can involve:
- Giving our kids a lot of great facts and verses to memorize.
- Helping them make connections in Scripture.
- Teaching eight- to twelve-year-olds how to use logic skills to work through studying God’s Word rightly.
- Introducing the grand themes of the story of Scripture.
- Appealing to their innate sense of adventure and love of story.
- Using fun language and absurd ideas. For instance, we can help kids understand God’s character better while we show them some of the amazing creatures he created.
We can teach our children to love God’s Word by presenting the Bible as the exciting adventure that it is. And, we can use fun tools like puzzles, journaling, and logic games to help our kids engage their brains. That approach to Scripture doesn’t lessen our high view of God’s Word.
It’s simply a smart way to teach.
