Facts about Moses for Kids
God’s prophet Moses is someone most Christian kids are familiar with. After all, in Sunday School, children learn about the stories of the burning bush, the plagues of Egypt, and the parting of the Red Sea.
But, do your kids know Moses’ life story? Moses’ life covers four books of the Bible. There is much to learn about God, and about our need for a Savior, as we read about Moses.
We can also learn some really cool facts. Here are a few your kids will enjoy!

Who Was Moses?

Check out ten facts about Moses your kids are going to want to know–straight from the Bible:
- Moses was born enslaved, to an Israelite family. By order of the Pharaoh, Moses was supposed to be killed as an infant.
- By God’s providence, Moses was raised in the family of the Pharaoh. He was educated in the court of one of the mightiest empires in the history of the world.
- Moses lived as Egyptian royalty until age 40. Then, he lived as a humble shepherd in the wilderness of Sinai until age 80. Until his death at age 120, Moses led God’s people through that same wilderness.
- When Moses led the people of Israel from Egypt, they had been there for 430 years.
- Moses is mentioned in the Bible almost 700 times. That’s a lot!
- Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible. He also wrote Psalm 90.
- Moses was a humble, or meek, man. When the Israelites complained against him, instead of getting angry, Moses reminded them they were actually complaining against God.
- Moses witnessed many of the most amazing events in history. None of that compared to getting to know God face to face, though!
- Even though God protected Moses when he saw God, his face still glowed. Moses had to wear a veil so he wouldn’t frighten the Israelites with his bright skin.
- God buried Moses in the valley of Moab. No one else knows where Moses was buried! (Deuteronomy 31:5-6)
And, here’s a few facts about Moses from history:
- When Moses was born, the Great Pyramid of Giza had already been built. In fact, it was built about 400 years before Abraham was born.
- Slavery was widespread in the ancient world, but ethnic slavery–like the enslavement of the entire Israelite race–was unusual.
- The Egyptians had many idols they worshiped. Each of the plagues God sent to Egypt directly mocked their fake gods!
- There are two proposed dates for the Exodus. If we work backward from dates in Scripture, as most conservative theologians do, Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt in 1446 BC.
- Around 1208 BC, Pharaoh Merneptah had his victory over Libyans inscribed in a stele. The Merneptah Stele reports the Egyptians battled Israel in Canaan c. 1230 BC. It’s the earliest historical mention of Israel outside the Bible.
