Who Was Moses?

10 Facts about Moses Kids Will Love

Check out ten facts about Moses your kids are going to want to know–straight from the Bible:

  1. Moses was born enslaved, to an Israelite family. By order of the Pharaoh, Moses was supposed to be killed as an infant.
  2. By God’s providence, Moses was raised in the family of the Pharaoh. He was educated in the court of one of the mightiest empires in the history of the world.
  3. Moses lived as Egyptian royalty until age 40. Then, he lived as a humble shepherd in the wilderness of Sinai until age 80. Until his death at age 120, Moses led God’s people through that same wilderness.
  4. When Moses led the people of Israel from Egypt, they had been there for 430 years.
  5. Moses is mentioned in the Bible almost 700 times. That’s a lot!
  6. Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible. He also wrote Psalm 90.
  7. Moses was a humble, or meek, man. When the Israelites complained against him, instead of getting angry, Moses reminded them they were actually complaining against God.
  8. Moses witnessed many of the most amazing events in history. None of that compared to getting to know God face to face, though!
  9. Even though God protected Moses when he saw God, his face still glowed. Moses had to wear a veil so he wouldn’t frighten the Israelites with his bright skin.
  10. God buried Moses in the valley of Moab. No one else knows where Moses was buried! (Deuteronomy 31:5-6)

And, here’s a few facts about Moses from history:

  1. When Moses was born, the Great Pyramid of Giza had already been built. In fact, it was built about 400 years before Abraham was born.
  2. Slavery was widespread in the ancient world, but ethnic slavery–like the enslavement of the entire Israelite race–was unusual.
  3. The Egyptians had many idols they worshiped. Each of the plagues God sent to Egypt directly mocked their fake gods!
  4. There are two proposed dates for the Exodus. If we work backward from dates in Scripture, as most conservative theologians do, Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt in 1446 BC.
  5. Around 1208 BC, Pharaoh Merneptah had his victory over Libyans inscribed in a stele. The Merneptah Stele reports the Egyptians battled Israel in Canaan c. 1230 BC. It’s the earliest historical mention of Israel outside the Bible.

“As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.” – Psalm 16:3, ESV

Christian History Matters for Our Kids.

History matters. Now, more than ever, we see how important it is for our children to know and understand history and the Bible.

Here’s why:

  • God is the sovereign ruler of all things. It’s important for our kids to see his hand in the history of nations and in the lives of both peasants and kings.
  • Christian history is the story of our family history. Our kids get to see how people who love Jesus follow him.
  • Understanding history can help our kids learn historic and biblical theology. They learn what the Bible says and what that means for us. They also see when the study of Scripture has taken important turns that have changed the Church.
  • Reading Christian biographies and history can be a wonderful way for kids to think outside their own time and culture. God’s Church spans centuries and includes people from every nation.
  • Christian biographies help kids consider their own faith, walk with Jesus, and the impact their witness may one day have on others–and on history.

Elementary-aged kids need middle grade resources that are fun, a little sassy, and that teach valuable lessons.
