Not only is the Exodus an important period of history, understanding the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy help for a vital foundation for understanding important teachings in God’s Word.
The Story of Moses and the Exodus
Studying Moses, the tabernacle, and the Exodus can seem to be a daunting task. Not only was Moses the author of the first five books of the Bible, he was the subject of four of them. The New Testament–and parts of the Old–also comment on the story of Moses, of the tabernacle, and of the Exodus. This Holy Spirit-inspired commentary teaches us how to rightly understand the story of Moses and the Exodus. Synthesizing that much Scripture for 7-12 year olds can seem overwhelming.
You have no need to worry! With very little effort or planning on your part, your kids can learn about the humble man who knew God face to face. They can learn about the biblical shadow of the tabernacle that pointed toward Jesus and heavenly realities. And, they can learn nine important facts about God’s rescue of his people–and how he trained them in the desert to worship and follow him.
This fun Exodus unit study is made up of three smaller studies your kids will enjoy. Along with engaging books on each subject, you’ll find hands-on activities to help cement the learning.

Moses, God’s Prophet
The story of Moses, God’s prophet, is exciting. It’s the story of God calling a people to himself. Through Moses, God led the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to the edge of the Promised Land. God spoke through Moses to teach his people who he is and how to worship him. Even as the man who knew God face to face, Moses remained humble, caring for God’s people even as they grumbled.
Today, we still read the words of God through Moses in the first five books of the Bible.
Your unit study on Moses, the man who knew God face to face, includes a fun, 95-page biography, Who Was Moses?. Your children will learn about the life, times, and impact of God’s important prophet.
- Who Was Moses? by Danika Cooley | Who Was Moses? (Christian Focus Publications, 2024) is a fun way for kids to learn about the man God called to be his prophet, to write the first five books of the Bible, and to lead God’s people out of slavery in Egypt during the Exodus.

The Tabernacle
The tabernacle is an important lesson in our relationship to God, and in Jesus’ role as our Savior. Because the New Testament teaching on the tabernacle comes later, and because the story of the tabernacle is spread over many chapters of the Pentateuch, it’s helpful for children to be able to read the story of the tabernacle, how it functioned in worship, and what God says about this traveling temple devoted to worshiping him.
As they learn about the tabernacle, our kids can better understand who God is, why we need a Savior, how Jesus saved us, and how we are commanded to worship him.
Your unit study on the tabernacle includes a fun, 95-page biography, What Was the Tabernacle?. Your children will learn about the function, organization, and purpose of each part of the tabernacle.

The Exodus
God’s story of the Exodus from Egypt is miraculous. Through his rescue of his people, God taught us: God is faithful. He desires to be known to us. God is sovereign, our Savior, and he is with us. There’s more: God is our all-powerful provider, he’s victorious, and he is holy.
These are the lessons that God taught to his people, the Israelites, and they are the lessons he teaches us today through the story of the Exodus. That’s the lesson we want our kids to take away from reading about God’s rescue of his people.

Christian Biographies for Kids | Christian History for Kids | Theology for Kids

Christian History Matters for Our Kids.
History matters. Now, more than ever, we see how important it is for our children to know and understand history and the Bible.
Here’s why:
- God is the sovereign ruler of all things. It’s important for our kids to see his hand in the history of nations and in the lives of both peasants and kings.
- Christian history is the story of our family history. Our kids get to see how people who love Jesus follow him.
- Understanding history can help our kids learn historic and biblical theology. They learn what the Bible says and what that means for us. They also see when the study of Scripture has taken important turns that have changed the Church.
- Reading Christian biographies and history can be a wonderful way for kids to think outside their own time and culture. God’s Church spans centuries and includes people from every nation.
- Christian biographies help kids consider their own faith, walk with Jesus, and the impact their witness may one day have on others–and on history.
