My good friend Amy Blevins from Encouraging Moms at Home had the opportunity to pre-screen Disney’s new film, Beauty and the Beast. She took the time to share her thoughts here at Thinking Kids.
As my daughter and I drove away from our pre-screening of Beauty and the Beast last Thursday, we had a nice long chat about the story of Lot. I’d like to think I would have been more like Abraham and taken the second choice of land instead of grabbing the best for myself. But hind sight is 20/20 right? The truth is–none of us know which choice we would have made in that situation in which Lot chose the best land for himself.
As I consider the facts of the “exclusively gay moment” which has been included in the Disney’s Beauty and the Beast’s Live Action Film, the story of Lot and his family is what keeps coming to my mind. I don’t want our family to be so at home in this world that we think nothing of the moral decline we see spiraling around us. It’s not going to get any better–the Bible tells us it will get worse and worse until the last days. By the time Lot and his wife fled the city, the men of the city had been trying to beat down his doors so that they could rape his angelic visitors, and yet Lot lingered until the angels literally threw him out of the city!
The better question is “How will we teach our children the difference between living in the world and living of the world?”. That’s the question that the story of Lot and his family begs us to answer. And we need that answer soon because the overwhelming message of our culture these days is that truth is relative and we can do whatever we want and say it isn’t sin. I don’t want my family to be so enamored with our culture that when forced to flee we cannot help but look back with longing.
Amy Blevins lives with her husband and six beautiful children in the state of Virginia. Besides writing, Amy enjoys homeschooling, hiking, reading, singing, teaching, and serving Jesus above all.
