I’d like to thank Master Books for providing me with a copy of The Mineral Book in return for my honest review.
I think I’m going to have to register as an unabashed fan of the Master Books Wonders of Creation line of books. Our family loves them. After all, every glossy page is gorgeous, the information is fascinating, and they’re the perfect level for middle school students. I just happen to have two boys in 5th and 6th grade who love science. I love that these books can be used for independent study as well. That’s perfect for us.
This school year my boys have studied The Archaeology Book and they’re just finishing The Geology Book. I was really excited to receive The Mineral Book by David McQueen (Master Books, 2014). It’s a perfect fit for what the boys have been studying. Also, we have boxes and boxes full of minerals one of my boys can use this book to classify. That makes me so happy.
Take a look at some of the incredible layouts in The Mineral Book by David McQueen (Master Books, 2014). Every page looks like this!
Each spread is color-coded with information written at three levels, so kids can skip some of the more technical information if the chemical composition of the minerals is too much. This allows the books to be used by a family in a classroom situation with different aged children.
The book is 94 pages with 8 chapters and a mineral identification guide. The chapters cover: Where Do We Find Minerals?, What Is a Mineral?, How Do I Identify a Mineral?, Discovering the Minerals in the Bible, A World of Valuable Minerals, Minerals and Creation Science, Minerals and Creation Science, Minerals and the Lordship of Jesus, and Building a Mineral Collection. At the end of the book there is a fold-out poster of the mineral pigments around the world. Additionally, each chapter highlights a particular mineral and covers some of the history of mineralogy. There’s a heavy emphasis on the Bible throughout the book.
The Mineral Book is an informative introductory science text on minerals with fascinating tie-ins to the Bible. I know my boys will enjoy studying this text this spring, and I anticipate many happy hours searching for sparkling rocks.
