Questions Jesus Asks by Israel Wayne is a fabulous devotional for middle and high school students - and parents!

I want to thank Cross Focused Reviews and New Leaf Press for providing me with a copy of Questions Jesus Asks by Israel Wayne in return for my honest review.

When Israel Wayne’s devotional Questions God Asks published in 2014, I loved reading it. He took a number of the questions God asked in the Bible and, using personal story, history, the writings of past Christians, and Scripture, Mr. Wayne addressed one theological view per chapter. I was excited when I heard that he had a second book in the same vein publishing, Questions Jesus Asks (New Leaf Press, 2015). I jumped at the chance to review it for you!

Questions Jesus Asks is structured in the same manner. Israel Wayne discusses questions Jesus asked in the New Testament, and the theological application to our lives. The questions he covers address:

  • Christology
  • The Virgin Birth
  • Family
  • Discipleship
  • Money
  • Healing
  • Counseling
  • Fear
  • Demonology
  • Servanthood
  • Government
  • Forgiveness
  • Apologetics
  • Lordship
  • Prayer
  • Suffering
  • Love
  • Persecution
  • Hell
  • Resurrection

I found this book engaging, enjoyable, and informative. I read the first six chapters to my family on a short day trip, and we all enjoyed it. My boys are 11 and 12 – we’ll finish reading this together in a few weeks when we start school. (I like to read a chapter of a biblically-oriented book at breakfast.)

I appreciate that Israel Wayne addresses these issues (some very difficult issues) from a theologically conservative position (meaning he treats the Bible as the true, inerrant, inspired Word of God), and that he does so with grace and humor. With areas that are interpreted in a number of ways, I find that he says things like, “Many theologians believe…”. Now, in some cases I find that there are many theologians who disagree (like in the case of Isaiah 14:12-15 and Exodus 28:14-19 referring to Satan – there are good reasons to believe these passages do not refer to Satan), but I appreciate the openness with which the statements are made.

I really enjoy Israel Wayne’s writing style, and the manner in which he presents his subject matter. Both Questions God Asks and Questions Jesus Asks are informative and interesting to read. I highly recommend them for middle school and up.

Israel Wayne is a cofounder of Family Renewal Ministry, as well as an author, columnist, conference speaker and radio host. You can find him at IsraelWayne.com.
