Questions God Asks - A Review by Danika Cooley

I’m reviewing Questions God Asks by Israel Wayne of my own volition. Now you (and the federal government) are alerted. 😉

Breakfast at our house is always a time for devotions. We study the Bible seriously once school starts and again at family worship, but early in the morning we just enjoy setting our minds on Christ by reading a section from a devotional and also a small section of Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology. The topics of our devotionals have varied greatly… it’s just a way to look at some issue from a biblical worldview.

Take your kids through the Bible in just three years! Try out Bible Road Trip™ with a free three-week sample pack.

As the boys have gotten older, I’ve been on the hunt for devotionals we can use for middle school and high school. (I’ve also been keeping an eye out for great books to assign as additional reading.) I was excited to discover that Questions God Asks by Israel Wayne (New Leaf Press, 2014) is an excellent choice for our breakfast readings. Though some of the chapters are a little longer than others, they are sub-divided into sections so we can cover just a section or two at a time if we want.

So often, we humans focus on the questions we ask of the Lord. Questions like: “Why am I suffering?” “Why is there evil?” and “What should I do?”. As we read through the Bible, however, we discover that God frequently asks questions of His people. This isn’t because God doesn’t know the answers to His questions. Rather, God uses His questions to teach us more about Himself, to call us to account, and to instruct us.

Questions God Asks covers nineteen of these questions that the Lord posed to His people in the Old Testament in a chapter each. Israel Wayne conversationally shares stories and observations from his own life or from history before addressing the Scripture passage in question. His insights and biblical knowledge are sound and cover issues that are central to our understanding of God.

I received this book (I won a giveaway from New Leaf Press on Facebook — you may want to follow them yourself!) at a difficult moment in my life. I read it with the intention of evaluating it for my boys, but I found that it provided a great deal of comfort in my trial. Understanding the Lord and His purpose for us can never do anything but draw us closer  to Him, and I appreciated Mr. Wayne’s ability to entertain while pointing readers to Christ and sound theology, and inspiring personal reflection.

Israel Wayne is a cofounder of Family Renewal Ministry, as well as an author, columnist, conference speaker and radio host. You can find him at IsraelWayne.com.
