Parables of Jesus for Children
Carine Mackenzie’s Jesus’ Stories: A Family Parable Devotional (Christian Focus Publications, 2024) is all about the parables of Jesus for your children. The hardcover picture book is 64 pages and covers 23 parables that Jesus told.
First, the book begins with an explanation of why Jesus told parables. Referring to parables as powerful stories, Carine Mackenzie explains that parables are easier for believers to remember, while unbelievers are unable to understand the meaning of Jesus’ stories.
In one to three pages each, Mackenzie retells each parable. To help children with comprehension, she asks thoughtful questions, offers a short prayer, or recaps the point of each parable. This is done in a different font and color than the type for the stories, so children will know the thoughts are not a part of the biblical story.
Every few pages, there is a page that says, “Let’s Pray!” Carine Mackenzie offers several ways to pray biblically for children to incorporate into their day.
As in all of Carine Mackenzie’s picture books, the writing in Jesus’ Stories is both winsome and clear. Children will come away with a better understanding of the parables of Jesus and how they apply to their own lives. The illustrations by Nicoletta Ranieri are happy and whimsical. Christian Focus Publications does not use illustrations of Jesus in observance of the Second Commandment.
