Once the tree is up we all sit around by the tree and tell the children the reason for Christmas & read them the story of our Lords birth. Later on we have popcorn & sodas while watching the movie of Jesus birth. After that the children watch a few Christmas shows for kids.

This giveaway is a great reminder to all of us to take it easy this season. So much to do and accomplish. Keep Christ as the center everyone and enjoy to whoever wins. How can I pick one favorite tradition..this is my favorite time of year!! hehe =) My most favorite tradition would probably be setting up the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving with all of my kiddos and Daddy. We always have eggnog and my most favorite (and childhood memory) Christmas music sung by Frank Sinatra and others. This year we started the new tradition of chopping down our own tree which i cannot wait to do this every year now and add to my children’s memory banks. =)

The last few years our traditions have revolved around the kids’ activities, with the winter production at a local community theater taking precedence, as well as winter soccer. Otherwise, we don’t really have any specific traditions, except for the annual reading of “The Night Before Christmas” from a beautiful die-cut copy each year on Christmas eve, if we are home.

My husband is a musician/conductor, so we don’t see much of him in December. Many years ago, though, he started a Christmas Day tradition that I love, based on a Swedish tradition for the 13th- Sankta Lucia Day. (Several of his choirs are Swedish.) He wakes our eldest daughter while the rest of us are still asleep. Together they make hot chocolate and sweet bread. Then she dresses in a white gown with a red ribbon belt and a crown of (fake) candles on her head. They carry the food to each family member and gently wake us with singing. I love that after the craziness of his musical life my husband does this special thing for us. This has been such a special event for our daughter that when her sister was born she asked us to name her Lucia- and we did!

It would be spending extra time with my family. This is one of my favorite times of year from doing our Jesse Tree, to decorating our house, to making cookies together. This year we have been collecting items for different organizations to make other people’s Christmas brighter. Even helping out our church to decorate for Christmas has been fun. It is just a blessing.

I have always enjoyed looking at Christmas lights. This year I am hoping to be able to {start} focusing more on the gift of Jesus. Because of bad choices that broke up our family in 2009 (& the ongoing aspect) & pain issues (me); Aspergers, ODD, Anaphylactic allergies (both sons)… holidays have been really difficult. Praying/trying to get the real meaning back for my sons…while they are still at home (11&17 now…but ASD). So, trying to get some Jesus centered traditions going.~

My favorite tradition is gathering with family on Christmas Eve to light candles and sing hymns of praise. We read the story of Christ’s birth as well as the prophesies telling of His birth. The children then can give a gift of worship by playing a musical instrument, reciting Scripture or singing. We do not exchange gifts within our family at Christmas. Instead, on Christmas day, we find a way to serve as our gift to God as we remember His birth and His ultimate gift of salvation to us. This is a most wonderful time of year and one our whole family anticipates eagerly throughout the year!

I have two favorite Christmas traditions with my family. First an “old” one, as in passed down through the generations through my father’s family – Slovak in ancestry – the celebration of gift-giving (setting out our shoes the night before) on St. Nicholas Day, Dec. 6th. Secondly, a “new” one, as in something that is new to our family, not a tradition passed down from my parents or my husband’s – daily Scripture reading from an advent calendar for the first 24 days of December all pointing to the birth of the Savior, and reading of the birth event on Christmas Day. Thank you so much for this giveaway!
