Every time I open a box from Master Books, I am overwhelmed by the beauty of the book inside.
(Written in 2014.)
Master Books, um, books are beautiful.
We’re reading Unwrapping the Pharaohs: How Egyptian Archaeology Confirms the Biblical Timeline right now, and wow! ~ it’s a beauty–hardcover, glossy pages, and fabulous photographs.
God Made Bugs | Book for Kids
Bugs: Big and Small God Made Them All by William Zinke (Master Books, 2014) is no deviation from the beautiful publications I’ve come to expect from Master Books. There are 80 pages of glossy, full-color photographs, all printed on a lime green background. I love the photos of the bugs, and especially the photographs of children encountering bugs.
My youngest is a zoology-freak. He loves anything living. Anything. When he was younger, I would find him with all of his animal books spread open across the floor, using a tape measure to carefully mark the size of each animal. I used to hide our permanent markers. If I’m going to be really honest, I hid this book as soon as I saw it. Because once he finds it, I’ll never see it again. I don’t know where it will live, but it will be cherished–and gone.
So… I had to read this quickly so I could write my review and hand it over. It’s only been a couple of days, and the guilt is starting to eat at me.
Anyhow… take a look at a few of the pages below. Pretty, right?
Even the many, many (MANY) life-sized giant beetle pictures were spectacular. (Blech.)
You’ll want to note that there are 12 punch out collector-style cards with gorgeous bug photos on one side and information about each bug on the other. Those cards are the very first thing that will be ripped out of this book. Well, hopefully the only thing ripped out of the book. One of my kiddos is going to measure every bug and the other is going to memorize the scientific names and geographic locations of each insect.
The book has five chapters: Amazing Creepy Crawlers (all about insects), Jumbo Giants (I am SO glad I don’t live in the tropics right now), Weird and Wonderful (these bugs are so unusual, it’s impossible not to love them), Bugs in Camo (God.Is.Amazing. Seriously.), and Bizarre and Beautiful (who know bugs could be so gorgeous? wow!).
Like all the other Master Books I’ve read, this one is comes from a strongly Christian worldview. It refers to God and the Creator. The end of the first chapter offers an explanation of why something God created plagues (well, sometimes plagues) humans. Will Zinke points to the Fall. Incidently, did you know that only some species of mosquitoes suck blood–and then it’s only the females? Many mosquitoes are actually vegetarians. Huh. Wouldn’t it be interesting if that’s how God originally made all mosquitoes? Something to ponder.
I have to go gift this book to my boy. The guilt of hiding it is getting to me.
