I happen to believe that when the Bible says that God created the earth and the heavens in just 6 days… He did. I also believe that He flooded the earth, and that Noah built a boat. I believe that what the Lord says is true, whether His words are found in John, Revelation, Daniel or Genesis. I don’t think it’s an accident that Jesus referred 6 times to the first 7 chapters of Genesis (Creation through the Flood) as though the events described actually occurred. I don’ t think it’s strange that there are over 200 New Testament references to the first 11 chapters of Genesis (Creation through the Tower of Babel). In fact, I think science is bearing out the Word of God in amazing ways. Creation always bears witness to the truth of the Creator.
So, I was excited when my family found the Jonathan Park Audio Adventure audio series around 3 years ago. They’re an exciting audiobook series about a public-school boy (Jonathan – who eventually homeschools) and his family (the Parks), and their neighbors, Jessie (a homeschooled girl) and the Brennans. Mr. Park is a paleontologist who was a respected evolutionist won to Christ by the scientific evidence he finds in his work. Of course, once he becomes a creationist, his career takes a drastic turn. That’s where we enter.
Life is never dull for the Parks, or for the Brennans. Their adventures are fast-paced, exciting and keep us all on the edge of our seats. In fact, they are so nail-biting in places that our kids opted to wait awhile to listen to the series. They’re 7 and 9 now, and they enjoy it immensely. The audio books are packed with scientific and historical information, as well as biblical facts. I never cease to be amazed at the wealth of information my children digest when they’re listening. The stories are engaging and well-written, acted out professionally.
I appreciate the family values, the science, the history, the apologetics, the creationist worldview, and the entertainment value. Each adventure comes with 12 episodes on 4 discs (5 hours of listening), and a book with activities, additional information and great drawings. The boys listen while they play with LEGOS and K’Nex, and at night before they sleep. As a family, we’re not big on television, but we love the radio. I think there is a whole different level of attention required when listening.
We live in an age of information, change, and challenge. Facts and evidence are often lost amid the emotional fervor of our personal beliefs. Fortunately, we also live in an age of creative expression and fascinating technology. Jonathan Park Audio Adventures is an example of the genius use of talent for the education of God’s people. I’m thrilled that my children are learning more in defense of God’s Word. I’m thrilled that we’ve found high-quality entertainment. The combination of the two is an absolute gift.
